About

David began his artistic journey on the streets and railway lines of north Brisbane in the late 80’s. It was here that he mastered the use of spray cans.

David has always loved drawing and continued this love through high school. It was in these years that he discovered hip hop culture, through music and the graffiti art scene. He knew from the first piece he saw riding the train to school, that this was something he needed to learn. And over the next couple of years this is exactly what he did. David received numerous commissions and his work was represented on legal walls all over Brisbane. He went on to work as an airbrush artist, painting amusement rides through till 1997.

Fast forward 20 years, and a combination of covid lockdowns and inspiration from other local street artists, drove David to re-hone the skills he hadn’t really used for a couple of decades. Recently, David has been exploring themes of Australian natives and how our culture exists within this land and our region.

Why Budgies ?

Budgies and Banksias are two icons of Australia’s landscape. David uses them to represent a quintessential Australian-ness most of us can relate to. Australia however is a far more complicated, multicultural place and Australian culture is being redefined all the time. The Chinese text (Hanzi) explores this by weaving in different cultural aspects of our diaspora in a bright and playful way. Overall, David’s art looks to examine modern Australian culture and where this places us in a global context.
